Updates for our Cortex and Dungeon Masters Guild Releases

Just a quick update concerning what’s going on behind the scenes here at neuronphaser.com!

Let’s take a look at what irons are in the fire:

Cortex Prime: A Multi-Genre Modular Roleplaying Game

Cortex Prime

HEAD SHOT! Since the success of the Cortex Prime: A Multi-Genre Modular Roleplaying Game Kickstarter, lead designer Cam Banks has released a few versions of the working document that will become the SRD (System Reference Document) for that game via Kickstarter updates and his Patreon: basically a fully-realized version of the game mechanics and character creation rules, but without examples and setting-related fluff. We’ve been following along closely, and will be releasing a playtest update to our game HEAD SHOT! that will provide all the Cortex Prime-related revisions to the game. This free PDF will be available here as well as added to the product page of the game, so all previous purchasers will automatically get it for download.

When the finalized Cortex Prime rules are released, we’ll do a complete revision of HEAD SHOT! to those updated rules. All previous purchasers will see the update, so if you buy our hack of Zombie Apocalypse Action Roleplaying at any time, you’ll receive both the original Cortex Plus version and the updated Cortex Prime version as soon as its done!

In the works! We’ve also got a semi-secret hack in development for Cortex Prime. We’ve bandied about the idea in a few social media spots, mostly in the form of development ideas and discussion. Look for it within a few months of Cortex Prime dropping. Oh, and if that’s too boring a tease, do note that we purchased the Prime Creative Package tier of the Cortex Prime Kickstarter, so that means we’ll personally be chatting with Cam about this project and getting his insights on the game design!

Is it weird that I’m fangirl-crying right now?

Layout Updates! We’re updating all of our releases to conform to the layout first seen in Old School Hacks Vol. 2: Player Roles and later in the adventure Modrons, Mephits & Mayhem! That means you’ll see updated, better laid out, and prettier versions of releases like Hexcrawling, Calendar of Harptos, and others.

(Oh, and we made the background art even more print-friendly and less intrusive, without losing layout artist Elena’s trademark awesomeness!)

Hexcrawling Revised! Some of our products will also receive a revision this year to add additional content based on user requests, and to revise some content to be more solid rules-wise thanks to playtesting or more versatile thanks to the ideas of many great game designers. As an example, Hexcrawling will get some new downtime systems as well as a couple different versions of the hexcrawl rules, some more complex and others much more streamlined. We want to provide ideas for all types of DMs and players, all levels of experience, and all tastes regarding simple vs. complex mechanics.

More! You’ll probably see some updates to both our Curse of Strahd and Out of the Abyss Dungeon Master Kits, since those products could use some additional player-facing content and added DM advice after a few years of running those campaigns. Remember that we update all our Dungeon Masters Guild releases by adding the newly revised documents right to the existing product, so if you purchased these things already, you’ll get access to the new stuff immediately. Check back at neuronphaser.com (you can subscribe using the widget on this page) or follow us on social media and we’ll let you know when this stuff is done!

Coming Soon-ish! We’ve got two products in immediate development for release by Spring, both involving hags:

  1. An adventure featuring a hag coven that has captured a dragon, only to succumb to infighting as they try to figure out what to do with the poor beast. Each hag and their lairs — filled with encounters and dripping with amazing writing by multiple authors — will be available to run as part of a connected Tier 2 campaign or as individual encounters inserted into any campaign!
  2. A guidebook that expands the information on hags found in Volo’s Guide to Monsters: new types of hags with fully realized stat blocks, random tables and lists of bargains, curses, and hag magic, and much more!

We’re also working on an Urbancrawling guide that will hopefully be as robust as Hexcrawling, and will include playable information on Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate right out of the package!
